Three calves born to Kansas cowBELOIT, Kan. (AP)--A Kansas cow implanted with embryos has given birth to triplets after the inserted embryo split into two and one of the two split again. The rare triple birth came March 30 in a pasture at the Dave Crumbaker farm south of Beloit in northern Kansas. After a hired hand told Crumbaker what he saw, the 23-year-old cattleman went to see for himself and found two calves attempting to nurse and the third trying to stand. Crumbaker said the calf that died had been removed from her sisters because their mother couldn't produce enough milk for three. He said the Angus heifers thrived for more than three weeks, but one died April 17 after due to health problems. Known as "embryo transfers," the practice is done to pass on genetics that produce the best cattle. 4/28/08 Date: 4/24/08
