Spring field work well under way

New Mexico

There were 6.6 days suitable for field work during the week ending April 20, and farmers spent the week planting, irrigating, and fertilizing crops, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, April 21.

Topsoil moisture was 41 percent very short, 35 percent short and 24 percent adequate. Wind damage was 46 percent light and 15 percent moderate. Freeze damage was 17 percent light and 6 percent moderate.

Alfalfa was reported as 4 percent poor, 26 percent fair, and 70 percent good, with 20 percent of first cutting complete. Cotton was reported as 8 percent planted. Corn was reported as 13 percent planted.

Irrigated winter wheat was 11 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 4 percent excellent, with 21 percent headed, and 55 percent grazed. Dry winter wheat was reported as 53 percent very poor, 45 percent poor, and 2 percent fair, with 5 percent headed, and 14 percent grazed. Total winter wheat was 32 percent very poor, 31 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 17 percent good, and 2 percent excellent, with 11 percent headed, and 30 percent grazed.

Lettuce was reported as 10 percent fair, 60 percent good and 30 percent excellent. Chile was 31 percent fair, 37 percent good, and 32 percent excellent, with 81 percent planted. Onions were 10 percent fair, 60 percent good and 30 percent excellent.

Cattle conditions were 2 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 44 percent fair, 29 percent good and 1 percent excellent. Sheep conditions were 7 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 38 percent fair and 36 percent good. Range and pasture conditions were 20 percent very poor, 50 percent poor, 27 percent fair, and 3 percent good. Livestock producers have been busy supplemental feeding, hauling water, calving, and moving cattle.
