South St. Paul stockyard to hold final auction

SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ A more than 120-year tradition is ending in South St. Paul.

The Central Livestock Association conducts its final auction at the stockyards April 11.

The yards date back to 1886 and once covered 160 acres, making the market one of the nation's largest.

But the yards are down to 27 acres, and the working-class city of about 20,000 is now trying to create a new identity.

Central Livestock employs 35 workers. Last year, about 240,000 cattle, hogs and sheep went through Central Livestock.

Offices, warehouses and industrial buildings eventually will cover the closed stockyards.
