Kansas City area children to get a taste of agriculture through pizza

National Ag Day event shows how agriculture brings food from farm to fork

Kansas

Approximately 560 school children and educators from across the Kansas City metropolitan area will learn where their food comes from while attending a pizza party, March 25. This event, which is part of the 2008 bi-state observance of National Agriculture Day will be held at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs.

Students and educators will begin the day rotating through stations focused on explaining each pizza ingredient--dairy, meat, vegetables, wheat, soybeans--and where they come from.

After the students learn about the ingredients that go into making the food they eat, they'll gather to eat pizza and ice cream. This celebration will conclude with magician Rex Getz's "Magical World of Agriculture" presentation.

"Pizza is one of the few foods that combine all four segments of our state's agriculture including grain, vegetables, meat and dairy products," John Schlageck, Kansas/Missouri Ag Day spokesperson said. "Local commodity groups will teach students how the ingredients in pizza come from farms and ranches, and how each is processed and delivered to the grocery store or restaurant."

The Kansas/Missouri Ag Day Pizza Party is being held in conjunction with National Ag Day--an annual celebration of the farm and ranch families who provide Americans and others worldwide with food, fiber and fuel. While promoting unity in the food and agricultural community, National Ag Day provides an opportunity for the non-farm public to learn more about agriculture and its vital role in their lives.

"This ag program helps educate millions of consumers each year by sharing how agriculture provides almost everything we eat, wear use and even fuel our vehicles with," Schlageck said.

Five schools consisting of 14 classes and teachers and 310 students plan to attend this year's Ag Day event from Kansas. Three schools, 14 classes and teachers and 260 students are expected from Missouri. This year's Ag Day pizza party is slated to begin at 9:10 a.m. and run until 1:30 p.m.

A team of nearly 30 agribusiness professionals from both Kansas and Missouri helped plan and orchestrate this yearly event. They planned the day's logistics and raised the funds necessary to host this pizza party.

Kansas/Missouri Ag Day Pizza Party sponsors include: Missouri and Kansas Farm Bureaus, County Farm Bureau organizations in Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties, Agriculture Hall of Fame, Kansas Soybean Commission, Kansas Beef Council, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Wheat Commission, Midwest Dairy Council, Missouri Beef Industry, Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri/Kansas National Agri-Marketing Association, Missouri Pork Producers Association, Missouri Soybean Association and Missouri Vegetable Growers Association.

Kansas Farm Bureau represents grassroots agriculture. Established in 1919, this non-profit advocacy organization supports farm families who earn their living in a changing industry.
