Cattle on feed numbers releasedNebraska: Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.45 million cattle on feed on April 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. This inventory was down 1 percent from last year but 2 percent above April 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 360,000 head, up 3 percent from 2007 and 7 percent above March 2006. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 390,000 head, up 5 percent from both last year and two years ago. This ties March 2000 for the highest March marketings since the series began in 1993. Other disappearance during March totaled 10,000 compared with 10,000 during March 2007 and 15,000 during March 2006. Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 340,000 head in Oklahoma on April 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, down 3 percent from both the previous month and April 1, 2007. Placements during March were 50,000, 26 percent below one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during March were 58,000, down 13 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during March totaled 2,000 head. South Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000-plus capacity feedlots reported 225,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on April 1, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 5,000 head from a year earlier and down 10,000 head from a month earlier. Placements during March totaled 32,000 head, down 8,000 head from last year and down 5,000 head from February 2008. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 37,000 head, unchanged from last year and down 3,000 head from February 2008. Other disappearance during March totaled 5,000 head, up 2,000 head from last year and up 3,000 head from February 2008. Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.88 million head on April 1, up 3 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Texas Field Office, the estimate was down 1 percent from the March 1 level. Producers placed 450,000 head in commercial feedlots during March, down 13 percent from a year ago, but up 2 percent from the February 2008 total. Texas commercial feeders marketed 480,000 head during March, down 3 percent from last year but up 9 percent from last month. On April 1, there were 2.43 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 84 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was up 3 percent from last year but down 2 percent from the March total. March placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 384,000 head, up 2 percent from the February total. Marketings were up 10 percent from last month to 415,000 head. Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on April 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.42 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago but slightly above the number on hand March 1. Placements during March totaled 440,000 head, 14 percent lower than a year ago but 13 percent above February 2008 placements of 390,000 head. Marketings during March totaled 415,000 head, 3 percent below March 2007 but 4 percent above February 2008. Other disappearance was 15,000 head, down 5,000 from a year ago but up 5,000 head from the previous month. The percent of March placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 13 percent; 600-699 pounds, 22 percent; 700-799 pounds, 34 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 32 percent. United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.7 million head on April 1. The inventory was slightly above April 1, 2007 but 2 percent below April 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during March totaled 1.74 million, 11 percent lower than 2007 and 5 percent below 2006. Net placements were 1.64 million. During March, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 335,000, 600-699 pounds were 330,000, 700-799 pounds were 561,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 510,000. Marketings of fed cattle during March totaled 0.00 million, unchanged from 2007 and unchanged from 2006.
