The Colorado Brand Book

By Michael Fisher

CSU Golden Plains Area Livestock Extension Agent

Colorado

In this article, I would like to target those readers/livestock owners who are newer residents of the state of Colorado. As someone who has personally lived in multiple states, I have in the past found it semi-difficult to find out what the livestock laws for each state have been. This can be a frustration for some livestock producers when they become a resident of a new state. They want to move their animals with them but they may be unaware of what the regulations in the new state are.

As I suspect you are already aware, Colorado is a brand state. What a new resident may not be aware of is the fact that every five years the state publishes the Colorado Brand Book. The 2007 edition came out in January. As one might expect, the book lists those brands that are registered with the state and who those brands belong to. The book also contains 35 pages of livestock information taken from the state code. (This is not a complete reference of Colorado livestock law.) Some examples of the included regulations that the book discusses are: brands and branding, earmarking, dogs worrying stock, stray animals, lawful fence, livestock inspections and agistor's lien.

The Colorado Brand Book can prove to be a valuable resource for the Colorado livestock owner. This is especially true if you are a newer resident and are unfamiliar with the expectations of the state. The book is available from the Colorado Brand Board, 4701 Marion St., Ste 201, Denver, CO 80216 for the cost of $30. You can also find out more about the Colorado Brand Book by contacting the brand board at 303-294-0895.
