Grathwohl Memorial Herdsman awarded

2007 Herdsman of the Year selected during the National Western Stock Show

The American Shorthorn Association brought back the Herdsman of the Year Award for the 2007 National Shorthorn Show held during the 2008 National Western Stock Show. The Herdsman of the Year was honored with a trophy buckle in memory of Lawrence Grathwohl. Three members of the Grathwohl family, Nancy Grathwohl, Andy Grathwohl and Becky Bacon, were in attendance to present the award during the selection of the Grand Female of the 2007 National Shorthorn Show to Travis and Beth Pembrook.

Lawrence Grathwohl was a loyal member of the American Shorthorn Association who died at the age of 41 from injuries received from a pickup truck accident. He raised livestock and farmed his entire life; however, he was known for raising Shorthorn cattle, which he showed all across the country. Throughout his years, he received several awards and special recognition for his show cattle, including his last champion exhibited at the 2003 North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville, Ky., WHR RT RODEO AUGUSTUS 2111.

"The Herdsman Award is a great tribute to Lawrence's memory. He was a competitor at heart and had the opportunity to exhibit many champions during his career. He really valued the Shorthorn friends he made over the years traveling to shows across the country," says Nancy Grathwohl, niece of Lawrence.

To make the honor even more special, Travis and Beth Pembrook were selected by their peers to receive this honor. Members of the ASA present at the National Shorthorn Show were asked to nominate who they saw fit in receiving this memorial trophy buckle.

Travis and Beth Pembrook are the owners of Pembrook Cattle Company in Fairview, Okla. Together, they run a herd of 200 head of registered cattle and operate a custom fitting service. Pembrooks have been the herdsmen for V8 Shorthorns of Boling, Texas for the past five years. Over those past five years, Pembrooks have exhibited more than 20 All Americans for V8 Shorthorns. Currently, they are showing the leading animals for the 2008 Show Heifer of the Year, Miss V8 Mollie Jo, and 2008 Show Bull of the Year, Mr. V8 D'Brickashaw. These two animals were also named Supreme Champion Female Overall Breeds and Reserve Supreme Champion Bull Overall Breeds at the 2007 California State Fair.

Jimmy Williams, owner of V8 Shorthorns, looks back on how he met the Pembrooks:

"About six years ago, we were looking for someone to help us at V8 Shorthorns by managing our show and sale cattle. My good friend Bill Couch, of Indiana, said he knew the perfect people, Travis and Beth Pembrook of Oklahoma. We met with them in Louisville and knew right away that they were a first-class team. They began helping us right away and have always done a great job with the cattle and have represented V8 Shorthorns in an extremely professional manner. We couldn't be happier for Travis and Beth receiving this much deserved honor."

The Lawrence Grathwohl Memorial Herdsman of the Year will continue to be selected during the National Shorthorn Show. The 2008 herdsman will be chosen during the 2008 North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, Ky.

The mission of the ASA is to contribute to the profitability and quality of life of its members and their customers by maintaining, protecting the vulnerability, and enhancing the value of the herd book and performance database for Shorthorn cattle. The ASA is headquartered in Omaha, Neb., and was founded in 1872, with herd book records going back to 1822. As one of the oldest American breed associations, the ASA provides services for more than 6,000 junior and senior members who register nearly 18,000 cattle annually.
