April 25 AgriLife Extension Field Day in McKinney to get down to basicsTexas The first North Central Texas Basic Agricultural Field Day will take place April 25 in McKinney. It will be held at the Myers Park Event Center, 7117 County Road 166, and is open to residents of Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt and Rockwall counties. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the event will end after a 4 p.m., evaluation session. The cost at the door is $10, which includes lunch. The field day is co-sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Noble Foundation of Ardmore, Okla. The foundation was created to encourage farmers and ranchers to be mindful of land stewardship and resource conservation. The program was designed for people who are new to agriculture or those who are returning to it after a long time, said Rick Maxwell, a field-day coordinator and AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture in Collin County. "This clientele is the largest group we work with and create educational programs for," Maxwell said. "We hope this field day will provide them with a start on resources and information they will need to be successful in agriculture." Maxwell said he expects 200 people to attend the field day. Discussion topics include the basics of managing cattle, goats, horses, pastures and ponds, according to the event's itinerary. The program also includes selecting farm equipment and farmstead planning. Sessions will be led by experts from AgriLife Extension, the Noble Foundation, Texas A&M University, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, said David Annis, an agricultural consultant with the Noble Foundation. To register in advance, send a $10 check payable to the Collin Ag Support Fund to Texas AgriLife Extension, Collin County, 825 N McDonald St., Suite 150, McKinney, TX 75069. Include a note stating the payment is for field-day registration.
