West Plains cattle sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,000 head April 8, compared to 1,963 head last week and 2,965 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers at 400 to 800 pounds were steady to $2 lower. Heifers at 400 to 700 pounds were $2 to $5 lower, and heavier weight cattle were mostly steady. Light calves under 400 pounds were steady to strong with last week's light test. The supply was moderate. Demand was uneven, at best moderate, and some order buyers indicated cattle were hard to sell this week, especially the un-weaned, un-vaccinated and those carrying a little too much flesh, with higher feed costs and fuel placing even more emphasis on gain without grain. The supply consisted 57% steers and 43% heifers, with nearly 36% over 600 pounds.
