Texas AgriLife agencies offer two ag programsBy Miles Dabovich Texas AgriLife Extension agent, agriculture, Wichita County Texas It's easy to tell that it's spring time in north Texas because the weather changes every 12 hours. One day, it's hot; the next day, you'll need a jacket. Also, with the spring comes the time when we start thinking about grass production and the wheat crop. The Texas Agri-Life Research and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service will be offering two educational programs dealing with wheat and summer forage production. On April 10, the AgriLife Research Center in Vernon will be hosting the Rolling Plains Spring Field Day at the Chillicothe Research Station located at 1340 FM 392 in Chillicothe. Field stops will include Small Grains Breeding Program, Subsurface Drip Irrigation, Fertilizer Application and Management, and Use of Mesquite as a Biofuel Resource. Speakers will also include State Representative Rick Hardcastle, Mr. Lewis Britt (office of Congressman Mac Thornberry), Mr. Stan Bevers, Extension economist and Dr. Bill McCutchen, associate director for Texas AgrLife Research. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will be conducting a Forage Grass Seminar on April 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Wichita County Extension Office, 600 Scott. Registration is $10 and is due to the Extension office by April 11. Fifteen participants are required for the meeting to take place. Speakers will include Chuck Coffee, forage specialist from the Noble Foundation and Jim Johnson, soil fertility and crop specialist from Noble Foundation. Topics will include Variety Selection of Summer Forage, Seeding Techniques, Fertilization Requirements and Weed Management. Remember paid registration is due by April 11.
