Spring's steady, slow emergenceIowa Cold, wet weather conditions limited field work during the week ending April 6 as spring continued its slow emergence in Iowa, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, April 7. Gravel roads have yet to firm up, making grain and livestock hauling difficult. There were 0.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 0.9 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 1 percent short, 61 percent adequate, and 38 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 1 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus. Oat seeding was 2 percent complete, behind last year's and the five year average of 8 percent and 27 percent, respectively. Fertilizer application, at 53 percent, was 3 percentage points behind last year and 4 percentage points behind the five-year average. Pasture and range condition rated 7 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 41 percent fair, 32 percent good, and 2 percent excellent.
