Red Angus Juniors anticipate "Red Angus Days, Tennessee Nights"

The National Junior Red Angus Association of America will host the 18th annual Junior Round-Up June 24 through June 29, in Tennessee. Round-Up is an annual event held at a different location across the country each year. It is designed to build public speaking and leadership skills while informing attendees about the Red Angus breed as well as the beef industry. The annual JRA business meeting, board meeting, committee meetings and officer elections are held during Round-Up as well as a variety of National contests. Participants in Round-Up travel by deluxe motor coach to the various ranches and industry stops during the week.

This year, Red Angus juniors will be touring Tennessee as they convene in Nashville and then travel throughout the state and into northern Alabama during the five day conference. Hosts of the event are various Red Angus breeders from Tennessee and Alabama.

Highlights of the week will include tours at CPC Commodities LLC, Fountain Run, Ky.; Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville; Mont-Vue Farms, Lenoir City; University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville; Red Hill Farms, Bart and Sarah Jones, Lafayette, Tenn.; Dr. Dick Daughtery's heifer development facility and vet clinic; Whitley Red Angus, Horton, Alabama; Swan Creek Red Angus, Rhonda and Darryl Deist, Petersburg, Tenn.; Atkinson Red Angus, Pulaski, Tenn.; and Hickory Hill Red Angus, Wily Finley and John Carter, Taft, Tenn.

Guest Red Angus breeders who will display cattle at Swan Creek include Rocky Hill Farms, Charlotte and Howard Bobbitt; Boxwood Farm, the Duke family; Red Top Livestock, the Patterson family; and Pat and Ron Lampley).

In addition, speakers addressing the group during the week will include faculty and staff members from Tennessee Tech University and University of Tennessee as well as a variety of breeders and industry representatives.

National JRA contests held during Round-Up include: Stockman's Quiz and Equipment Identification, Team Sales, Team Judging, Print Advertising, Scrapbook Competition, Poster Contest, Cattle Evaluation, Ranch Rodeo and Quiz Bowl--all of which lead up to the coveted "Best All-Around Individual" award. The week's activities will include a stop at Rising Star Ranch, a Tennessee Walking Horse operation, Shelbyville, and an afternoon at Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge.

Special "junior" guests attending Round-Up include members of the Canadian Junior Angus board of directors. The JRA and the Canadian Junior Angus Association cooperate with the American/Canadian Exchange program in which members of each organization attend the summer junior event sponsored by the respective organization. New officer training (a day of intensive leadership and team building training) for juniors elected to serve on the National Junior Red Angus Board during Round-Up will be held on June 29
