NAYI application deadline nears

Nebraska

Nebraska's high school juniors and seniors interested in exploring the agricultural industry while strengthening their leadership skills still have time to apply to attend the 2008 Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute.

NAYI will be held July 13 to 17 in Lincoln. Approximately 140 students will be selected based on their leadership skills, interest, and involvement in agriculture.

Joe Holoubek, Ag Youth Coordinator for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and a former NAYI delegate, is overseeing the day-to-day planning of the Institute.

"NAYI is a wonderful opportunity for Nebraska's youth," Holoubek said. "It brings students from all over Nebraska together to foster their interests in the agricultural industry."

The five fun-filled days will include motivational speakers, discussion on agricultural issues and opportunities, a computer-simulated farm management program, as well as a picnic, formal banquet, and dance.

The Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council, made up of 14 college-age men and women selected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, coordinates the event. NAYC's purpose is to provide young Nebraskans with a better understanding of agriculture, including agricultural opportunities available to today's youth.

Applications are still available through county extension educators, high school guidance counselors, and agricultural education teachers. Those interested can also contact the Nebraska Department of Agriculture at 800-422-6692 to receive an application or visit www.agr.ne.gov to fill out an application on-line. Applications are due April 15.
