Indianola-area farmer avoids charges for starving cattle

INDIANOLA, Neb. (AP)--Authorities say an Indianola-area farmer won't face charges for starving to death 111 cattle and neglecting about 140 others.

The Red Willow County Sheriff's Office says the man, who was not named, sold the live cattle and properly disposed the bodies of the dead cattle to avoid prosecution.

Sheriff Gene Mahon says it would have been too expensive for the county to feed and house the live cattle during prosecution.

Court documents say Nebraska Brand Committee officials visited the farm in January and found the bodies of 12 cattle that had died on an iced-up pond.

The officials found about four dozen other cattle carcasses and 80 to 100 live cattle in poor condition. There was no feed visible or source of water.
