Winter wheat seeding behind average

Colorado

Colorado received minimal amounts of moisture during the week ending Sept. 16, and most areas were below average, with the exception of the San Luis Valley which reported amounts about average for this time of year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Sept. 17.

The Front Range had a break from high temperatures last week, but the rest of the state posted temperatures higher than normal. Producers had an average of 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork.

Winter wheat was 24 percent seeded by the end of last week. This is slightly behind last year and the five-year average which were 27 and 37 percent, respectively. Spring barley was 99 percent harvested and spring wheat was 93 percent harvested by the end of the week.

Sorghum was 82 percent turning color, 42 percent mature, and 5 percent harvested. The crop is in mostly good condition. Dry onions were 56 percent harvested and in mostly good condition. Sunflowers were 7 percent harvested and rated in mostly good condition. Summer potatoes were 45 percent harvested and in mostly excellent to good condition. Fall potatoes were 19 percent harvested and in mostly good to fair condition. Corn was 99 percent dough, 80 percent dent, 39 percent mature, and 2 percent harvested by the end of the week. Fifty-nine percent of the corn silage crop was harvested by week's end. The corn crop is in mostly good condition. Sugarbeets were 2 percent harvested and in mostly good condition. Dry beans were 47 percent cut and 20 percent harvested, with the crop in mostly good condition

Third cutting was 76 percent complete with 4th cutting 5 percent complete by the end of the week. The crop is in mostly good condition.

Conditions decreased last week with the lack of moisture and elevated temperatures. Pasture and range are rated in mostly good to fair. Death loss for cattle was reported at average while sheep were below average last week. Livestock is rated in mostly good condition. Stored feed supplies are above average for this time of year.
