Winter wheat planting underway

For the week ending Sept. 16, cool, dry conditions helped crops progress towards harvest with nearly half of the state's corn crop now mature and 4 percent harvested, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Sept. 17.

The colder weather led to reports of frost in low lying areas in the Northeast District. Activities around the state include beginning fall harvest, planting winter wheat, and baling hay.

Temperatures averaged 7 degrees below normal across the state. The Northwest District saw highs in the low 90s, while the Northeast District saw lows dip to the freezing mark. All districts received at least traces of rain but only the Northeast District averaged over an inch.

Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 30 percent excellent, well above last year's 55 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 86 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 71 percent , both above year ago levels. Corn in the dent stage was 98 percent, ahead of last year's 96 percent and 93 percent average. Corn mature was 46 percent, ahead of last year's 38 percent and 37 percent average. Corn harvested was 4 percent, ahead of last year's 3 percent and even with the five-year average.

Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 27 percent excellent, well above last year's 59 percent good or excellent condition. Soybeans turning color was 83 percent, ahead of the 82 percent of last year and average. Soybeans dropping leaves was 28 percent, behind last year's 31 percent and 40 percent average. Soybeans harvested was 1 percent, ahead of last year's 0 percent but behind the 2 percent average.

Alfalfa conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 14 percent excellent, well above last year's 38 percent good or excellent condition. Third cutting was 99 percent complete, behind last year's 100 percent but ahead of the 97 percent average. Fourth cutting was 37 percent complete, behind last year's 49 percent and 41 percent average.

Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 31 percent excellent, well above last year's 54 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum turning color was 94 percent, ahead of last year's 93 percent and 83 percent average. Sorghum mature was 13 percent, behind last year's 21 percent and 22 percent average.

Dry bean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 8 percent excellent, well above last year's 58 percent good or excellent condition. Dry beans dropping leaves was 76 percent, well ahead of last year's 57 percent and 53 percent average. Dry beans harvested was 30 percent, ahead of last year's 23 percent and 21 percent average.

Winter wheat seeded was 35 percent complete, ahead of last year's 30 percent but behind the 37 percent average. Winter wheat emerged was 7 percent, ahead of last year's 4 percent but behind the 11 percent average. Proso millet harvested was 38 percent, ahead of last year's 24 percent and 36 percent average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 6 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, well above last year's 13 percent good or excellent condition. Good fall grass is reported in many areas.
