West Plains regional cattle sales
The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 5,000 head Oct. 18, compared to 5,121 head last week and 4,805 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers, all weights, and heifers over 550 pounds were $2 to $3 lower, while heifer calves under 550 pounds sold $4 to $6 lower. The supply was moderate, and calf quality was more attractive this week. Demand unevenly moderate to good, best on higher quality heavy 5 to mid 6 weight calves, with those weaned and double-shot along with about any yearling attracting the best interest. Currently the 25 to 30 degree swing in day/night temperatures has brought about the seasonal October demand in the calf market, leaving backgrounders and pen riders of feedlots living close to the syringe. Forcing order buyers to cautiously fill orders with cattle, that in their opinion, are least likely of causing health problems, in an attempt to keep customers happy, consequently soft/fat un-weaned bawlers and fat bulls aren't on too many orders without a big asterisk designating discount. Feeder supply consisted of 46% steers, 5% bulls and 48% heifers, with nearly 38% weighed over 600 pounds.
