Weather cools down

Montana

Temperatures cooled down during the week ending Sept. 16, with highs mainly in the 80s with some locations experiencing temperatures in the lower 90s degrees, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Montana Field Office, Sept. 17.

Culbertson had the high temperature at 92 degrees, and Scobey experienced the low of 12 degrees. The state received limited precipitation for the week. Nye had the most moisture at 0.45 inches. Topsoil moisture adequate and surplus was 18 percent, below last week's 20 percent and last year's 42 percent. Subsoil moisture adequate and surplus is 20 percent, below last week's 21 percent but above last year's 19 percent. There were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. The weather outlook for September 24th through September 30th is for near normal temperatures and near normal precipitation east of the continental divide and for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation west of the divide. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the mid 60s to the mid 70s and lows in the lower 30s to the upper 40s.

Range and pasture feed conditions declined slightly from last week. Ranchers continue to move their livestock from summer pastures.

Winter wheat seedings are 28 percent complete, ahead of last year's progress of 19 percent as well as the 5 year average of 25 percent. Pulse crop harvest is almost complete except for dry beans being 62 percent complete. Seventy percent of corn for silage has been harvested and 88 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent compared to 85 percent last year.
