Out-of-state hay marketing

Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture, Dick Bell received a request from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture in regards to assistance in locating hay for the Tennessee livestock industry.

An Aug. 31 news story broadcast by News Channel 5 in Nashville highlighted concerns of producers and the efforts invested to stabilize the industry that covers all classes of grazing animals. According to the news report, Tennessee producers are paying above market prices for hay located in-state and are now checking out-of-state sources that will enable them to winter livestock. The call to Arkansas is one effort in the process.

Similar hay and forage shortage issues prompting out-of-state marketing efforts have been reported in many of the Southeastern states affected by summer drought following a reduced carryover of 2006 hay supplies.

Arkansas hay producers having surplus hay can enter their contact information on the computerized Hay Data Base that is accessed at http://hayprodcers.uaex.edu/. Once on the site click on "AR Hay Producers Users Guide", access the on-line form and enter your information, which can then be submitted on-line or downloaded for mailing to the address provided.

Only Arkansas producers may enter hay information on this site, however, anyone looking for hay may access the site information. Most states have a similar hay data system in place, which can be accessed by contacting their County Extension Office.

Data entered by producers will include: Contact information; hay type; bale type, size and weight; and if hay is priced by bale or ton. Keep in mind that information entered will be available to the public until you request that information be removed from the data base.
