Iowan reaches final round in 27th National Beef Cook-Off

If the aroma of succulent beef cooking already isn't enough, Lisa Huff of Clive has a great taste idea for you--so good, in fact, that she is pitting it against beef recipes of some of the most creative amateur cooks in the nation.

Huff will be off to Chicago as one of 25 talented competitors in the final round of the 27th National Beef Cook-Off, America's premier amateur beef-cooking event, on Sept. 11 to 13. This year's contest, funded in part by the Beef Checkoff Program, features a $50,000 "Best of Beef" grand prize and eight other cash prizes totaling more than $100,000.

"We've chosen these outstanding recipes from thousands sent by beef-loving cooks around the country," says Sherry Hill, Cook-Off project manager. "We are challenging these 25 contestants and family chefs everywhere to 'Seize Life' and discover new ways to enjoy the fabulous taste, versatility and ease of preparation that make beef your No. 1 protein choice. America's appetite for beef continues to grow, and these new creations are wonderful additions to the beef recipe box."

Huff will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition, where she will prepare her recipe before a seasoned panel of discerning beef enthusiasts. Judging will be based on taste, appearance, ease of preparation, healthfulness and nutritional balance. In addition to the grand prize, eight cash prizes totaling $60,000 will be awarded in four new categories that exemplify innovation and the "Seize Life" spirit of beef: "New Dynamic Beef" to fuel the body, "Nuevo Latino Beef" for active lifestyles, "Kids in the Kitchen" featuring fun and nutritional balance , and "Small Plates, Big Taste" as appetizers or entertainment portions.

Huff's recipe of Smoky Cilantro Pesto Beef Crostini was a top choice in the "Small Plates, Big Taste" Grilled for Everyday Entertaining category. "This recipe is so versatile and can be used as an appetizer, or as a main dish. Plus, it's easy to make ahead of time, which is great for families like mine with young kids," says Huff.

Winners and all the final recipes will be available on the www.beefcookoff.org immediately following the contest.

About the National Beef Cook-Off

The National Beef Cook-Off is now a biennial contest, presented back in 1974 by the Beef Checkoff Program. The contest was held annually until 1993. The Cook-Off is coordinated by the American National CattleWomen, Inc.

During its 33-year history, the Cook-Off has received accolades and the support of many notable culinary experts. American cooking icons Julia Child and James Beard were early supporters, serving as judges on numerous occasions.

This year, the Cook-Off is focusing on a "Seize Life" theme and the role that beef plays in an active lifestyle. The Cook-Off is an opportunity for family chefs to create enjoyable beef recipes that provide fuel for their families.
