'Take me out to the farmers' market'Kansas The Kansas City T-Bones have hit a home run with the opening of a farmers' market at the CommunityAmerica Ballpark near the Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County. The market is proving popular with local farmers, craftsmen and customers alike. "We were constantly hearing from our fans that the ballpark was where people met and liked to hang out. We also wanted to use the ballpark for more things that involved the community during the times that games weren't going on," said Katie Palm, market coordinator. The young market is picking up new customers every week and already drawing back regulars. Each T-Bones home game features announcements promoting the new market, and game go'ers receive coupons to "allow the thousands of fans to see and hopefully be able to make it to the market," Palm said. The T-Bones baseball team is part of the independent Northern League. "Every farmers' market has its own appeal. They are as unique as the communities that host them," said Jana Beckman, coordinator of the Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops, located at Kansas State University. Customers who shop at the T-Bones Farmers' Market are greeted by vendors who are lined up against a railing that is literally right next to the baseball field and stands. Shoppers view third base over stacks of freshly dug potatoes and boxes of vine-ripened tomatoes. Further along the concourse, farm fresh sweet corn is stacked like baseball bats. In Kansas City, Kan., at least, the ballpark is no longer just a place to congregate and view America's pastime. The CommunityAmerica Ballpark farmers' market is bringing people together in a new way, Beckman said. The market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m., to 1 p.m., through October. CommunityAmerica Ballpark is at 1800 Village West Parkway. More information about the ball park and the T-Bones is available at tbonesbaseball.com/ballpark/general/.
