SowBridge program offers convenient educational opportunity

Nebraska

Persons involved in managing or caring for boars, sows and/or their litters can learn more about the breeding herd during a year-long education series called SowBridge.

SowBridge, sponsored by Extension at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, The Ohio State University and South Dakota State University, offers timely, relevant and convenient learning, said Don Levis, UNL swine specialist and Nebraska host.

"Employees, technicians, managers, owners and technical service providers can all learn to improve the understanding and application of various tools and techniques involved in daily care of the breeding herd and piglets," Levis said. "If you work in or with breeding and gestation units, gilt development systems or farrowing barns, this program is for you."

Participants will be connected with industry experts where they can ask questions in the comfort of their own homes, offices or swine units, Levis said. Participation involves just 45 minutes every month.

"With the education and information needs of the pork industry continuously changing, this specific and current information is needed," Levis said.

SowBridge is modeled after the popular and similar PorkBridge series.

Programs are delivered at 11:30 a.m. Central Time. Session dates are Oct. 3, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 9, Feb. 6, March 5, April 2, May 7, June 4, July 2, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3. Sessions will be led by university and industry experts. There is no limit on the number that can be enrolled, but registrations for SowBridge are due Sept. 24.

Session costs of $250 include all 12 sessions and supporting materials.

One week prior to each session, participants will receive a CD in the mail. This CD will contain all the session materials, including spreadsheets, video clips, publications, etc. On the day of the session, participants just need to call a toll-free number. The only requirement is that participants be able to listen on the telephone while viewing the CD.

To register for SowBridge, contact Sherry Hoyer at the Iowa Pork Industry Center at 109 Kildee, ISU, Ames, IA 50011-3150, call 515-294-4496, fax 515-294-5698.

For more information, contact Levis at 402-584-3816.
