Newell sheep sales reportSt. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 2,236 head Aug. 23, compared to 3,078 head last week and 3,646 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D. Compared to last week, slaughter ewes sold steady to $3 lower. Feeder lambs weighing less than 100 pounds sold steady to $2 higher while lambs weighing over 100 pounds sold $3 to $4 higher. Receipts were shortened by the much appreciated rain. Receipts included about 85% feeder lambs, 12% slaughter ewes and the balance was bucks, miscellaneous sheep and goats. Buyer attendance was good with good demand for most classes offered. Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 172 to 178 lbs., 25.25 to 27.00 (26.11). Good 2 to 4, 22 head, 207 lbs., 18.75. Utility 1 to 2, 134 to 152 lbs., 21.25 to 22.25 (21.92). Cull 1, 74 head, 134 lbs., 10.50. Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 40 head, 45 lbs., 109.25; 184 head, 64 lbs., 112.50; 331 head, 72 lbs., 109.25; 47 head, 71 lbs., 107.25 blackface; 21 head, 72 lbs., 105.25 poor fleeces; 81 to 87 lbs., 107.25 to 109.25 (108.32); 28 head, 83 lbs., 103.70 short docks; 93 to 97 lbs., 102.25 to 104.50 (103.16); 100 to 107 lbs., 98.25 to 102.00 (101.08); 113 to 114 lbs., 96.00 to 97.75 (97.29); 31 head, 128 lbs., 99.50 fleshy. Medium and large frame 2, 27 head, 63 lbs., 107.75; 74 to 76 lbs., 103.75 to 104.00 (103.82); 22 head, 87 lbs., 104.25; 108 to 109 lbs., 96.00 to 97.50 (96.38).
