Cotton continues to progressTexas Scattered showers were prevalent across most areas of the state during the week ending Sept. 2 as South and Southeast Texas received the most rainfall, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Texas Field Office, Sept. 4. Cotton continued to progress in the Plains as harvest continued in the Coastal Bend and Lower Valley as weather permitted. Corn harvest continued in most areas of the state. Sorghum harvest continued in the Southern High Plains and the Blacklands and neared completion in South Texas. The pecan crop was looking strong in the Blacklands, Cross Timbers, and South Texas, but problems with limb breakage were evident due to heavy loads. Soil moisture was adequate in most areas of the state. South and South East Texas received the most rain with 1.5 to 4.0 inches of rainfall. North East Texas received 0.10 to 2.0 inches of rainfall. The Panhandle received 0.01 to 1.5 inches of rainfall. Trans-Pecos and the Edwards Plateau received the least amount of rainfall with zero to 0.25 inches. Hay cutting and baling continued across most areas of the state. Ranges and pastures continued to be in good condition across most areas of the state. Livestock remained in good to excellent condition in most areas of the state. Cotton remained in good condition in the High Plains as it continued to progress and set bolls. Cotton continued to do well in the Southern High Plains despite some reports of bollworms. Cotton has continued to bloom and set bolls in the Low Plains. Cotton was struggling in North East Texas due to abundant rainfall. Scattered showers delayed harvest in the Coastal Bend and Upper Coast. Cotton continued to set bolls in South Texas. Cotton condition was mostly fair to good statewide. Corn harvest for grain continued to be in full swing as it neared completion in the Blacklands and South East Texas. Harvest continued in South Central Texas as weather permitted. Harvest neared completion in the Upper Coast and South Texas. Statewide, corn condition was mostly good to excellent. Sorghum remained in good condition as harvest continued in the Southern High Plains. Harvest continued in most areas of the Blacklands with good yields reported. Harvest neared completion in South Texas. Sorghum conditions were mostly fair to good statewide. Pecan trees were heavily loaded causing limb breakage problems in the Blacklands. Pecans continued to look good in the Cross Timbers with heavily loaded trees. Pecan growers were shaking trees to trim the load in South Central Texas to reduce limb breakage. Livestock continued to be in good condition across most areas of the state. Hay cutting and baling continued across most areas of the state with some reports of army worms in Cross Timbers. Ranges and Pastures remained in good condition in most areas of the state. Statewide, range and pasture conditions were mostly good to excellent. Date: 9/6/07
