Complaints about crop dusting on the rise in IowaDES MOINES, Iowa (AP)--State agriculture officials say complaints about crop dusting are on the rise as farmers work to contain an outbreak of soybean aphids. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has received 40 complaints since July 1, up from 13 complaints in the previous 12 months, said Chuck Eckermann, chief of the agency's pesticide bureau. He said most of the complaints are by homeowners who say their houses have been sprayed, or by organic farmers, who cannot be certified organic if their crops have been treated by chemicals. Palle Pedersen, an Iowa State Extension agronomist, said the infestation of soybean aphids in Iowa is the worst in four years. Eckermann said 217 businesses have been licensed to spray crops in Iowa. Of those, 175 are from out-of-state. Date: 9/5/07
