Alfalfa producers take hitIn Kansas, the hay trade is slow to moderate. Demand is moderate to strong for dairy alfalfa, moderate for prairie hay, moderate to weak for grinding alfalfa, stock cow quality hay, alfalfa pellets. The effects of readily available wet distillers grain is being felt more and more as new ethanol plants come on line. Feedlots and grower yards are substituting low quality, cheaper roughages in rations and taking out high protein alfalfa. Alfalfa producers are losing their primary market for utility and fair quality hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Aug. 28. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $150 to mostly, $200; supreme dairy, limited trade, $145-$150; premium, $135-$150; good dairy, some stock cow, $110-$135; fair/good stock cow, $85-$110. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$80, mostly, $75. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $100-$120. For the week ending Aug. 18, 12,282 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,007 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Bermuda grass, good, in small squares, $180, in large square and rounds, $125. PM6 good, in small squares, $155, in large squares, $135. Native grass, good, in small squares, $120 delivered. South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement slow to moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $140-$150; premium, $120-$140; good, stock cow, $100-$130, grassy, $85-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$80, utility, $70-$75. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Aug. 18, 3,477 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,544 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $135-$160; dehydrated, 17% protein, $185. Straw, good, in large squares, $45-$50, low quality, $40. Southeast: Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate to spots active. Alfalfa, horse and goat, in small or medium squares, $155-$160. Premium dairy alfalfa, scarce, $125; good, stock cow, $100-$125. Good bluestem, in small squares, $90 to mostly, $100, in medium and large squares, $75-$90, in large rounds, $55-$65. Good brome, in small squares, $90-$120, mostly, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $85-$95, mostly, $90, in large rounds, $60-$70, mostly, $65. Gamma grass, in medium squares, $90. Northwest: Grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $180-$200, in medium squares, $150-$160; premium/supreme dairy, $135; good, $110-$125; good stock cow, $95-$115; fair, in large rounds, $80-$85. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$80; ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $110-$125. Good brome, in large bales, $95. Good oat hay, in large bales, $100; fair, $80-$85. North central/northeast: Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, $125-$165; supreme dairy, $140-$150; premium, $130-$140. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$80, ground on truck, $90-$105. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $90-$100, in medium squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $55-$70. Premium brome, in small squares, $110-$130; good, in small squares, $90-$110, in medium squares, $90-$100, in large rounds, $70-$75; fair, in large rounds, $60-$70.
