West Plains livestock salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,000 head Oct. 2, compared to 3,800 head last week and 3,337 head last year, according to the Misouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers and heifers were steady to $3 lower. The supply was moderate, quality and uniform bunches were not as attractive for the most part. Demand was uneven, anywhere from light to good depending on orders and the buyer's judgment. Most pressure was noted on lesser quality, singles and smaller lots of uneven calves, straight to bred exotics as well as un-weaned, un-vaccinated offerings all suffering in this week's losses. Buyers continued to be selective, even reporting that during this time of year of hot days/cool nights, a lot of calves, especially soft bawlers, were rather difficult to keep alive, which kept the majority of the better local backgrounders either at bay or completely out of the market for time being. The feeder supply consisted of 50% steers, 5% bulls and 45% heifers, with nearly 36% over 600 pounds.
