Senator Roberts co-sponsors bill to help interstate meat sales

Kansas

Kansas Cattlemen's Association appreciates Senator Roberts' co-sponsorship of Senate Bill 1150, a bill to provide new markets for state-inspected meat and poultry.

The Kansas Cattlemen's Association worked relentlessly to include and pass S. 1150 in the 2007 farm bill by the House and addressed this issue to Senator Roberts. In a recent meeting with the Senator, he expressed his interest in supporting interstate meat sales from state inspected meat processors and since then has co-sponsored the bill.

Senator Roberts said, "S. 1150 helps Kansas producers expand their marketing options for high-quality and safe products raised, processed and inspected in the state."

"Kansas Cattlemen's Association is very happy that Senator Roberts co-sponsored this bill. The association specifically asked the Senator for his support to allow state inspected processors, typically custom plants in rural communities, to ship their product across state lines. Currently, the law restricts that marketing opportunity. It is great to see that the Senator understands the importance of rural communities and businesses," said KCA Executive Director, Brandy Carter.

KCA has been working hard to ensure that small producers and small custom plants that want to expand their markets have the opportunity to do so. Allowing state inspected meat to be shipped across state lines has previously been met with resistance from some groups, but with assistance from the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, KCA addressed the concerns citing that state inspections must be equivalent and in most cases, such as Kansas, are stricter than federal regulations.

State inspected meat processors, cattle ranchers, and rural communities received a major win and breakthrough in the House of Representatives when the provision passed. Kansas Cattlemen's Association will continue to work with the Senate to pass this bill as well.
