Newell sheep sale report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 5,196 head Sept. 27, compared to 11,422 head last week and 5,125 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, feeder lambs under 80 pounds were $1 to $2 lower, 80 to 90 pounds were firm, lambs over 90 pounds were $1 lower. Buyer demand was very good for 80- to 90-pound lambs, moderate for all other classes. Overall quality of lambs was not as attractive as last week with several smaller consignments in offering. Good slaughter ewes sold steady. Utility and Cull ewes were $2 to $3 lower, 70% of the run consisted of feeder lambs, 5% slaughter ewes, with the balance being slaughter bucks and miscellaneous sheep.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 143 to 149 lbs., 24.25; 209 head, 165 lbs., 26.25. Good 3 to 4, 68 head, 194 lbs., 25.00. Utility 1 to 2, 229 head, 153 lbs., 19.50. Cull 1, 254 head, 135 lbs., 7.75.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 70 head, 47 lbs., 116.00; 53 to 56 lbs., 115.25 to 119.00 (117.28); 61 to 69 lbs., 112.50 to 115.75 (115.07); 75 to 78 lbs., 107.50 to 108.75 (108.28); 81 to 87 lbs., 104.25 to 109.25 (107.25); 91 to 95 lbs., 99.00 to 102.50 (100.65); 40 head, 90 lbs., 97.75 poor fleeces; 58 head, 105 lbs., 98.25; 78 head, 100 lbs., 96.00 poor fleeces; 11 head, 111 lbs., 95.25; 49 head, 120 lbs., 93.00; 31 head, 132 lbs., 93.75. Medium and large frame 2, 55 to 58 lbs., 106.50 to 112.75 (110.18); 29 head, 76 lbs., 104.25.

Whiteface replacement ewes: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, price per head, 38 head, yearlings, 110 to 160 lbs., 87.50 to 107.57; 57 head, 2 years to solids, 150 to 170 lbs., 69.00 to 72.50; 74 head, 3 to 4 years old, 150 to 175 lbs., 56.00 to 57.00; 537 head, aged, 150 to 165 lbs., 47.00 to 54.00.

Blackfaced yearling breeding bucks: 11 head, 175 lbs., 115.00 to 160.00 per head.

Whitefaced slaughter bucks: 20 head, aged, 230 lbs., 20.25, 9 head, yearlings, 180 lbs., 28.50.
