NRCS announces Nov. 2 deadline for EQIP applications

Colorado

The Natural Resources Conservation Service has recently announced that applications received through Nov. 2, will be considered for enrollment in the 2008 Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

Applications received after Nov. 2, will be considered during subsequent unannounced batching of submitted eligible applications and will be processed throughout the fiscal year as needed.

The accelerated timeline for EQIP is intended to provide program participants and NRCS staff more time for quality conservation planning and economic analysis. All applications will be evaluated and funded on a watershed basis, with local and watershed workgroup input on conservation priorities.

"Any landowner who has considered utilizing the program is encouraged to submit an application before Nov. 2," said Tim Carney, Assistant State Conservationist for Programs, Lakewood, Colo. Over the past few years, we have seen unprecedented support for this program, which allows us to provide greater assistance in the conservation of our natural resources."

The NRCS is getting back to the basics by putting conservation planning at the forefront of its program initiatives. Though conservation plans are not required in order to participate in any of the NRCS programs, it is strongly suggested that landowners develop one because, in doing so, it will provide them with an inventory and assessment of their resources and a right start to the enhancement and improvement of the quality of their soil, water, air, plants, and wildlife.

EQIP is an incentives program that provides financial assistance for conservation systems such as animal waste management facilities, irrigation system efficiency improvements, fencing and water supply development for improved grazing management, riparian protection, and wildlife habitat enhancement.

Interested applicants may apply at the NRCS Field Office that services their county. Applications must be received in your local NRCS Field Office by 4:30 p.m., Nov. 2.
