Johnson elected to National Junior Red Angus board

Megan Johnson from Nunn, Colo., was recently elected as the 2nd Vice President of the Junior Red Angus Association of America. Elections were conducted during the 2007 JRA Round-Up, held in Colorado and Wyoming, June 26 to July 1.

Johnson returns to serve the second year of a two-year term in 2007-2008, representing the Mountains Region. During her first year on the JRA Board, Johnson served as the Leadership Director. Johnson's peers on the JRA board elected her as Second Vice President following the general elections.

"Megan will continue to add her enthusiasm and creative ideas to the JRA Board" comments Dawn Bernhard, Junior Programs Coordinator, Red Angus Association of America. "Her positive attitude and team approach will complement the JRA officer team."

In her first official capacity as Second Vice President for the JRA Board, Johnson attended the National Red Angus Convention held in Dodge City, Kan. There, the JRA held its first board meeting since the elections in June. During Convention, the JRA Board completed fund raising activities, conducted the junior activities meeting, attended workshops and seminars and assisted with the elections of RAAA board of directors. The JRA Board also spent time making plans and scheduling the 2008 Round-Up, an educational and leadership development event for JRA members that highlights the cattle industry and Red Angus. The board also confirmed plans for the 2008 National Red Angus Junior Show to be held on Jan. 27, in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Additionally, Nathan Nelson from Starbuck, Minn., was elected to the Junior Red Angus Association of America Board of Directors. Bernhard states, "Nathan brings a unique combination of enthusiasm and a strong commitment to Red Angus to the JRA Board. His ideas and experiences with Red Angus and as a Minnesota Red Angus Ambassador will complement our goals of growth and improvement within the JRA."

Nelson was unanimously elected to serve by JRA membership. He is an animal science major at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. Nelson will serve a two-year term on the JRA board and was elected by his peers to serve as the Leadership Director for the 2007-2008 year. Nelson's position includes planning and conducting leadership activities at all junior events for the JRA.

The next official event for the JRA board will be the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver in January. JRA Board members will be involved with the Junior Stockgrower's Contest by conducting ice breakers, hosting meals and preparing a workshop. The Board will also participate in the RAAA Brain Trust meetings and the Mile High Red Angus Sale. In March 2008, the JRA Board will attend the bi-annual Youth Beef Industry Congress held in Kansas City.

For more information about the JRA you can contact Dawn Bernhard, Junior Programs Coordinator at 515-679-4006 or dawn@redangus.org.
