Gillespie earns Junior Bronze, Silver awardsMontana Kari Gillespie, Kevin, Mont., has earned the National Junior Angus Association's Bronze and Silver Awards, according to James Fisher, director of junior activities for the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo. Gillespie, the 20-year-old daughter of Wayne and Roxy Gillespie, is a student at Montana State University, where she is studying animal science and ag business. She has shown her Angus cattle at shows on the local and state level. A NJAA member since 1996, she has enrolled her cattle in the Angus Herd Improvement Records program, utilized artificial insemination on her herd, and consigned them in local production sales. She has also raised a Pathfinder cow. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in the areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle. The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for nearly 11,000 members nationwide. 10/8/07 Date: 10/3/07
