Extension bulletin illustrates everyday tools for ranchers and farmers

Wyoming

A new University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service bulletin offers examples of tools and devices that can help older farmers and ranchers, or those with impairments, with everyday tasks.

The average age of Wyoming ranchers and farmers is 55-plus, according to Randy Weigel, UW College of Agriculture professor and director of Wyoming AgrAbility.

"Due to the normal aging process, age becomes a factor when considering the risk for injuries," he said. "Ranchers and farmers may experience decreasing muscle strength, gripping ability, range of motion and reaction time as they age. It is important to recognize one's limitations and make accommodations to perform work tasks safely."

UW CES and Wyoming AgrAbility developed the bulletin B-1182 Solutions for Living: Everyday tools for ranchers and farmers. A free printed version can be obtained by contacting Wyoming AgrAbility toll-free at 866-395-4986 or e-mail agrability@uwyo.edu. The bulletin can also be downloaded from the Wyoming AgrAbility website www.uwyo.edu/agrability. Click on the AT Resources link.

Amanda Hearne, project coordinator for Wyoming AgrAbility, said the purpose of the bulletin is to show examples of common products or tools that can help a rancher or farmer with everyday tasks and reduce the likelihood of an injury or accident.

The bulletin covers the following areas:

--Back-saving solutions including tools for moving heavy objects easily, to reduce strenuous bending or lifting, and to provide extra support for injured or strained backs;

--Reducing slips and falls with examples of products that provide traction in snow and ice, slip-resistant surfaces, and anti-slip coverings;

--Reaching solutions for those with limited strength and mobility and reaching objects without bending or stretching or to provide added safety when reaching;

--Gripping solutions for people with weak hands or arthritis that reduce stress to wrist, elbow and other joints and improve leverage strength;

--Work tools that limit strain to palm and fingers, reduce irritation to muscles and joints and provide one-handed solutions for arthritis, amputations or weak hands;

The bulletin also contains Web-based links where products can be obtained and links to sites containing other products or solutions to help ranchers and farmers with everyday tasks.
