Corn harvest gains momentumNebraska For the week ending Sept. 30, corn harvest gained momentum and was 17 percent complete, ahead of last year and the five-year average, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 1. Most corn, soybeans, and sorghum acres were mature and safe from potential frost damage. Soybean harvest also made progress but has been slowed by high moisture levels. In the west, dry bean harvest neared completion, well ahead of average. Other activities include drilling wheat, bailing hay, and weed control. Temperatures averaged 3 degrees above normal across the state with the Southwest District reaching highs in the 90's. The Northwest saw lows dip down to the freezing mark. All districts recorded precipitation but only the Northeast averaged over an inch. Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 31 percent excellent, well above last year's 59 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 86 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 69 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn mature was 88 percent, ahead of last year's 86 percent and 78 percent average. Corn harvested was 17 percent, ahead of last year's 9 percent and 13 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 30 percent excellent, well above last year's 61 percent good or excellent condition. Soybeans turning color was 99 percent, even with last year and the five-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves was 84 percent, behind last year's 90 percent and 89 percent average. Soybeans harvested was 13 percent, behind last year's 15 percent and 23 percent average. Alfalfa conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 12 percent excellent, well above last year's 45 percent good or excellent condition. Fourth cutting was 75 percent complete, near last year's 76 percent and even with the five-year average. Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 34 percent excellent, well above last year's 59 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum mature was 76 percent, ahead of last year's 70 percent and 66 percent average. Sorghum harvested was 6 percent, ahead of last year's 5 percent but behind the 11 percent average. Dry beans harvested was 86 percent, well ahead of last year's 44 percent and 53 percent average. Winter wheat seeded was 78 percent, near last year's 77 percent but behind the 80 percent average. Winter wheat emerged was 42 percent, ahead of last year's 34 percent but behind the 49 percent average. Proso millet harvested was 86 percent, well ahead of last year's 49 percent and 63 percent average. Pasture and range conditions rated 5 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 7 percent excellent, well above last year's 18 percent good or excellent condition.
