CDA ends first-round of new disease prevention inspectionsColorado The Colorado Department of Agriculture has been working on bovine spongiform encephalopathy prevention since 1998, but on-farm inspections have been a new focus for the last year. Under authority by the Food and Drug Administration, CDA began the inspections in September 2006; in all, 75 cattle feedlots and dairies inspected for the program were found to be in compliance. "Colorado has 2.7 million head of cattle," said Julie Zimmerman, director of CDA's Inspection and Consumer Services division. "So disease prevention is good for the ag community as a whole." In August 1997, the FDA passed a new rule that prohibits feeding cattle and other ruminants (sheep, elk, deer, etc.) some commonly used protein feed ingredients made from certain mammalian tissues. These rules were intended to prevent the establishment and spread, in the U.S., of BSE. Colorado's beef industry totals $3.3 billion annually and constitutes almost 60 percent of the state's agricultural production. The BSE prevention rules help protect valuable export markets and bolster consumer confidence in Colorado beef products. In 1998, CDA began BSE inspections at feed manufacturers and is now also focusing on on-farm inspections in partnership with FDA. By next September, CDA will have inspected approximately 75 other locations, which are chosen randomly. "Colorado has never had a case of BSE and it's important to maintain that status," continued Zimmerman.
