55 contestants compete in auctioneer championshipFifty-five contestants will compete in Livestock Marketing Association's first two qualifying contests for the 2008 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship. The first contest, the western regional Oct. 6 at the Turlock, Calif., Livestock Auction Yard, Inc., has attracted 25 aspiring world champions. Thirty contestants will compete Oct. 25 in the southwestern regional, at Cattleman's Livestock Commission Co., Dalhart, Texas. The remaining two qualifying contests will be the eastern regional, Nov. 27 at the Fort Payne Stockyard, Inc., Fort Payne, Ala., and the Midwestern regional, Dec. 8, at the Lamoni, Iowa, Livestock Auction, Inc. Three regional champions will be named at each regional contest, and the top eight scorers at each event will move on to the 2008 WLAC, the 45th annual, next June in Durant, Okla. This is the second year LMA is using regional qualifying contests. LMA President Jim Santomaso said, "These 55 entries in the first two contests put us on track to pass last year's total of 93 contestants. We're pleased with the new growth in the contest, which is designed to spotlight America's top auctioneers, and the important role they play in promoting competitive marketing." The sale at Turlock starts at 10 a.m.; at Dalhart, 11 a.m. The reigning champion is Trent Stewart, Redmond, Ore. He won the title last June in Springfield, Mo. The 32 regional qualifiers, along with the reigning International Auctioneering Champion, will make up the field for the Durant WLAC. Three titlists will be named there, and the winners will receive thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes. LMA conducts the annual contest to spotlight competitive livestock marketing, and the auctioneer's continuing vital role in that process. 10/8/07 Date: 10/2/07 Advertisement
