Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Oct. 20, totaled 13,600 head, compared to 11,400 head last week and 12,700 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions steers and heifers calves sold generally steady to $4 higher, with instances of $5 to $7 higher, except calves at Torrington Livestock were steady to $2 lower and 450- to 650-pound steer calves in Riverton were weak to $3 lower. Yearlings were not fully tested but comparable sales were steady to $1 higher. Demand was good. Direct trading was slow. There were not enough comparable sales for an adequate market test. Demand was moderate to good. Buyer inquiry was moderate to good. Offerings were moderate. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent from base weight. Steers made up approximately 56% of the supply, heifers 44%, with 23% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 700 head of the total receipts.

Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 375 lbs., 131.00; 415 to 440 lbs., 129.00; 460 to 500 lbs., 114.50 to 124.00; 525 to 550 lbs., 109.00 to 111.50; 610 to 670 lbs., 109.50 to 114.00. Medium frame 1 to 2, 600 to 700 lbs., 113.00 to 117.50. Large frame 1, 485 lbs., 109.00. Medium and large frame 2, 600 to 625 lbs., 103.50 to 107.50. Large frame 3, Holsteins 740 lbs., 73.00.
