Wet fields limit harvesting

Nebraska

For the week ending Oct. 21, soil conditions remained wet across much of the state limiting harvest progress, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 22.

Corn harvest continued ahead of last year and near average while soybean harvest fell further behind. Water was reported to be standing in many eastern fields. The wet conditions have also slowed fall nitrogen applications. Producers had plenty of time during the week for equipment maintenance and livestock care.

Temperatures averaged near normal across the state and ranged from highs in the upper 80s in the southwest to lows in the mid 20s in the northwest. Precipitation was recorded in all districts with the Northeast District averaging over three inches.

Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 32 percent excellent, well above last year's 57 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 89 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 73 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn harvested was 44 percent complete, 3 days ahead of last year's 36 percent and near the 45 percent average.

Soybean harvest was 59 percent complete, 10 days behind last year's 81 percent and 12 days behind the 85 percent average. With harvest delayed do to wet conditions, the potential for field loss was a concern.

Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 12 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 33 percent excellent, well above last year's 71 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum harvest was 32 percent complete, behind last year's 40 percent and 49 percent average.

Winter wheat emerged was 91 percent, even with last year and the five-year average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 15 percent excellent, well above last year's 19 percent good or excellent condition.
