West Plains livestock sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 2,779 head Oct. 23, compared to 3,065 head last week and 3,750 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers traded $2 to $4 lower. Once again, the full decline was evident on the lighter weight calves as well as those that showed up unweaned and unvaccinated. The feeder offering was not as attractive, some showed the effects of the lack of grass or water and others were just looking for permanent homes. Buyers showed caution throughout the day, and looked for the feeders that had the best chance of avoiding the sick pen. The supply was moderate, mostly small packages and very few large bunches in the mix. Demand was light to moderate. The feeder supply was made up of 58% steers and bulls, 2% Holstein steers and 40% heifers, 35% of the feeders weighed over 600 pounds.
