Hay trading moderate to active

In Kansas, the hay trade is moderate to active. Demand strong for dairy alfalfa and stock cow quality hay, moderate for grinding alfalfa, alfalfa pellets and prairie hay. Alfalfa and prairie hay movement remain good to dairy and stock cow markets, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Oct. 23. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady to firm. Movement moderate to active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $150-$200, mostly $180-$200, clippings, $215, in 3x4x8 squares, $125-$130; supreme dairy, $150-$160; premium, $140-$150; good, $120-$140; fair/good stock cow, $100-$110; Utility/fair, $85-$105. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$85, mostly, $82.50. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $95-$120, mostly, $100-$105. For the week ending Oct. 13, 12,449 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,300 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sudan or cane, good, in large square or rounds, $70.

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa: Dairy, $145-$165; premium, $120-$145; good, stock cow, $100-$120, grassy, $85-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa at the edge of the field, $70-$75, some, $80 delivered, Utility, $55-$65. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Oct. 13, 4,618 tons of grinding alfalfa and 750 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein. $140-$160; 17% protein, $150-$165; dehydrated, 17% protein, $190. Straw, good, in large squares, $45-$50. Sudan, in large squares, $55, in large rounds, $45.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate. Horse and goat alfalfa, in small or medium squares, $155-$160. Premium dairy alfalfa, $125; good, stock cow, $100-$125. Good bluestem, in small squares, $90 to mostly, $100, in medium and large squares, $75-$90, a little, $100, in large rounds, $55-$65. Good brome, in small squares, $90-$120, mostly, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $85-$100, in large rounds, $60-$70, mostly, $65. Gamma grass, in medium squares, $90. Sudan, in medium squares, $90.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $180-$200, in medium squares, $150-$160; premium dairy, $125-$135; good, $110-$125; good stock cow, $95-$115; fair, in large rounds, $80- $85. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$80; ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $110-$125. Sudan and cane, good, in large square, $65-$70, in large rounds, $55-$60; BMR, in large rounds, $70. Cornstalks, in large squares, $50.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, $125-$165; supreme dairy, $140-$155; premium, $130-$140; good, $95-$135. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $65-$75, ground on truck, $90-$100. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $90-$100, in medium squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $55-$70. Premium brome, in small squares, $110-$130; good, in small squares, $90-$110, in medium squares, $90-$100, in large rounds, $70-$75; fair, in large rounds, $60-$70. Straw in large squares, $45-$65.
