Angus, Shorthorn steers win KJLS carcass show

Kansas

An Angus steer exhibited by Nathan Lanier of Walton won the Kansas Junior Livestock Show steer carcass contest. Lanier's 1,195 lb., steer bested 56 other entries by grading middle Choice with a yield grade of 3.2.

Following the late September livestock show in Wichita, all the cattle but the top five were sent to Cargill Meat Solutions in Dodge City for processing. The five highest placing live animals were sent to Richards Cold Storage of Valley Center. An index formulated from various carcass measurements was used to determine the winners. The top three steers in the carcass contest received cash prizes sponsored by Allflex.

The reserve champion carcass steer was a Shorthorn owned by Analena Simmons of Barnard. Simmons' steer weighed 1,212 lbs., live, graded middle Choice and was a Yield Grade 3.4. Third place in the carcass contest was the fifth place live steer, from the all-other-breeds division, shown by Shane Ligon of Paola. His 1,194 lb., entry graded low Choice and was a Yield Grade 2.3.

All the top five live steers were in the top 20 of the carcass contest. Ligon's steer was the highest placing among the five live winners in the carcass contest, with the grand champion live steer finishing 18th and the reserve grand champion live steer taking 6th in the carcass show.

Overall, the steers graded 49 percent Choice, 47 percent Select and 4 percent Standard. Eight steers qualified for premium branded programs, including Certified Angus Beef, Sterling Silver and Angus Pride. Sixty-eight percent of the cattle were Yield Grade 2 or better.

KJLS is sponsored by the Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas State University and the Wichita Chamber of Commerce. KLA's support of the show helps provide learning opportunities for young people interested in the livestock business.
