56th Annual Beef Bull Performance Test underway
Oklahoma The Annual Beef Bull Performance Test at Panhandle State University, Goodwell, Okla., is underway once again. This is the test station's 56th annual test. The bulls consigned to the test this year were officially weighed on test Oct. 13. There are 87 bulls consigned to the test this year, representing four beef breeds--Angus, Belgium Blue, Herefords and Maine-Anjou. Thirteen cooperators from the states of Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas have bulls on test. The test covers a period of 112 days during which data will be collected on each bull's average daily gain, weight-per-day of age, frame score, scrotal circumference, fat thickness, rib-eye area and marbling score. Feed efficiency is measured on a pen basis. The bulls are fed a growing ration consisting of rolled corn, rolled oats, chopped alfalfa, dry distillers grain, cottonseed hulls, molasses and protein supplement. Performance summaries will be reported at 28-day intervals during the test. The test will be completed Feb. 2, 2008 and the 56th Annual Bull Sale is scheduled for Feb. 25, 2008. The bulls are being cared for by the following OPSU student employees: Hillary Sherwood, Gunnison, Colo.; Bryant Weber, Woodward, Okla. and Ben Coble of Felt, Okla.
