Weather helps corn harvest move ahead of last year's paceNebraska For the week ending Oct. 14, favorable weather conditions early in the week kept corn harvest ahead of last year and average, however, rain over the weekend limited progress, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 15. Soybean harvest advanced but was still behind last year and average. In the west, producers were harvesting sugar beets and row crops. Other activities included moving cattle to stalk fields and hauling grain. Temperatures averaged 2 degrees below normal across the state. The Southwest District saw highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 20s. Several districts recorded lows near the freezing mark. Precipitation was recorded in all districts with the East Central District averaging over 2 inches. Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 33 percent excellent, well above last year's 54 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 87 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 74 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn mature was 96 percent, even with last year but ahead of the 95 percent average. Corn harvested was 37 percent complete, one week ahead of last year's 25 percent and two days ahead of the 31 percent average. Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 31 percent excellent. Soybean harvest reached 52 percent, but was four days behind last year's 70 percent and six days behind the 72 percent average. Alfalfa fourth cutting was 87 percent complete, near the 88 percent of last year and 89 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 52 percent good, and 32 percent excellent, well above last year's 59 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum mature was 96 percent, ahead of last year's 94 percent and 93 percent average; however, sorghum harvest was 25 percent complete, behind last year's 27 percent and 34 percent average. Dry bean harvest neared completion and was 96 percent, ahead of last year's 87 percent and 84 percent average. Winter wheat seeded was 97 percent, ahead of last year's 94 percent and 95 percent average. Winter wheat emerged was 76 percent, behind last year's 80 percent and 81 percent average. Proso millet harvest also neared completion and was 98 percent, well ahead of last year's 74 percent and 80 percent average. Pasture and range conditions rated 5 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, well above last year's 18 percent good or excellent condition.
