UW's SAREC adds research director, livestock specialistWyoming A research director position at the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center is intended to develop integrated research at the facility near Lingle. Also at the center, a livestock Extension specialist has been added. Jim Krall began as research director Sept. 1, and Extension specialist Steve Paisley began at SAREC Aug. 20, said Stephen D. Miller, associate dean and director of the University Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station. Krall has been a research scientist at the center and is a professor in the Department of Plant Sciences in the College of Agriculture. Creation of the research director position is meant to increase the amount of integrated activities at SAREC, said Miller. "Hopefully, this will enable us to get a number of multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary projects going and well-established," he said. SAREC, with its dry land and irrigated crop land, pasture, and livestock facilities, will enable researchers to study agricultural systems. "We have a unique facility here at SAREC," said Krall, who joined the research staff at the former Torrington Research and Extension Center in 1984. "We can look at all aspects of ag production and land management typical of the region. We have a unique opportunity to do integrated work and try to answer some of the system questions--what are the best cropping and livestock systems now and into the future?" Krall will work with researchers in the College of Agriculture to develop integrated projects. "We have a good base of young, energetic faculty members plus older faculty members, who are all very productive, that I will engage in projects here at the center," said Krall. "I'm looking forward to the challenge and think it will be a lot of fun." Paisley, who is the Extension livestock specialist, has moved from the UW campus to SAREC to continue his work. Paisley, an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Science, will remain beef cattle Extension specialist and will assume responsibility for the SAREC beef herd and help coordinate and conduct livestock research at SAREC. "I see one of my main responsibilities is making the James C. Hageman SAREC more visible," said Paisley, "and encouraging a better interaction with producers in the area as well as focusing on distributing information and research conducted at SAREC." Miller said an additional Extension livestock specialist will be hired to be at the UW Laramie campus and will share responsibilities with Paisley; however, Paisley will continue as the primary beef specialist. Krall and Paisley can be reached at 307-837-2000 and via e-mail at jkrall@uwyo.edu and spaisley@uwyo.edu. Date: 10/18/07
