High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal staff capture AMS awards

Seven High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal writers and designers captured 14 different awards this summer at the 2007 Agricultural Media Summit in Louisville, Ky. For the second year in a row Journal staff made a successful showing at the AMS contests.

The AMS is the largest gathering of crop and livestock publication professionals in the U.S., and is hosted by the American Agricultural Editors Association, the Livestock Publication Council and the ABM AgriCouncil. While the event itself focuses on networking and professional education, the AMS contests showcase excellence in ag communications and journalism while providing constructive evaluation of writing, design and marketing pieces.

Jennifer Latzke, associate editor, took top honors in AAEA's regular column category with her Common Ground column, "The Unsung Heroics of Dads." LPC also awarded her with second place in the humor writing category with "Hippies In The Mist." Latzke's Common Ground column is featured twice monthly in the Journal and was awarded honorable mention in the regular column category. Latzke was also honored as an AAEA master writer, the highest level awarded.

Kylene Orebaugh, copy editor, wrapped up first and second place general photography in the LPC Best of the Bunch photo contest. Two Journal designers claimed awards in the cover design category. Diana Derstein placed second with her wildfires design, depicting the tragedy of grassfires in western Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Amanda Johnson received an honorable mention for her environmental portrait of rancher Ken Holloway.

Senior field editors Larry Dreiling and Doug Rich also topped the awards list. Dreiling received second place for his humorous article "Another Year Older and Wealthier," in the AAEA contest. His "Roundup Raises a Stink about a Stink" news story also placed second from LPC. Rich took an LPC second place award in the feature or human interest story category with "Preserving Corn Harvest Traditions" and third place for his "Inject Safety into Livestock Treatment Procedures" instructional story. Rich was recognized as a Level 2 master writer while Midwest Ag Journal field editor Jennifer Bremer was acknowledged as a Level 1 master writer.

High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal is a weekly ag news publication with six different geographic editions and 52,000 paid subscribers. The Journal has been an essential industry news source for agricultural decision makers for more than 50 years.
