Estate planning program set

Colorado

Colorado State University Extension in Adams, Boulder and Weld counties is offering this estate planning program for area residents due to the importance of this necessary planning for area agricultural producers and others. The events will take place Nov. 13 at the Deer Trail Fire Station and Nov. 15 at the S.W. Weld Training Complex.

If you fail to plan ahead, a judge will simply appoint someone to handle your assets and personal care and your assets will be distributed to your heirs according to a set of rules known as intestate succession. Your heirs could also be writing a significant inheritance check to the government. An estate plan gives you much greater control over who will inherit your assets after your death and can save both the State Inheritance and Federal Estate Tax dollars for your heirs.

Estate planning is a process. It involves people--your family, other individuals and, in many cases, the charitable organizations of your choice. It also involves your assets (your property) and the various forms of ownership and title that those assets may take. And it addresses your future needs, in case you ever become unable to care for yourself. Estate planning is like going to the dentist. Nobody wants to do it, but it is necessary--so cowboy up.

Through estate planning, you can determine the following: how and by whom your assets will be managed for your benefit during your lifetime, if you ever become unable to manage them yourself; when and under what circumstance it makes sense to distribute your assets during your lifetime; how and to whom your assets will be distributed after your death; how and by whom your personal care will be managed; and how health care decisions will be made during your lifetime, if you become unable to care for yourself.

Many people mistakenly think that estate planning only involves the writing of a will; however, it also involves financial, tax, medical and business planning. A will is part of the planning process, but you will need other documents, as well, to fully address your estate planning needs.

Registration is $40 per participant plus $10 for each additional family member. To register, please call the Weld County Extension Office at 970-304-6535.
