Cooler temperatures prevailWyoming During the week ending Oct. 14, crop conditions were steady, with hay harvest winding down, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Oct. 15. Rain was welcomed by most of the state last week. All but three stations reported precipitation last week. Temperatures ranged from 0.4 degrees below normal and 6.4 above normal. Averages were mostly in the 40s and 50s. Low temperatures were mostly in the 20s and 30s with highs in the 70s and low 80s. Moisture levels for top soil and sub soil were better than average for this time of year. Top soil moisture was reported as 44 percent adequate, compared to 35 percent for the five-year average. Sub soil was 24 percent adequate, compared to 21 percent average. Stock water supplies were 53 percent adequate or better. There were 5.8 days suitable for field work. Conditions for the sugar beet and corn crops as well as the 2008 winter wheat crop remained steady last week. Surgar beet harvest was 24 percent complete, 11 points behind normal. Almost all of the corn was dented. Eighty-six percent of corn was mature and 12 percent had been harvested for grain. Corn harvested for silage was nearly complete. The dry bean crop was 84 percent was combined near average pace. The third cutting of alfalfa was winding down with 92 percent complete, 11 points ahead of the five-year average. Range and pasture conditions were virtually unchanged from last week with 64 percent fair or better. Date: 10/17/07
