Bond joins KFAC staff

Kansas

Leah Bond has joined the staff of the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom as an administrative assistant.

"We are very excited to have someone of Leah's caliber join our staff. She brings a strong communications background as well as hands-on experience in agriculture and a desire to educate children about the importance of agriculture to our lives and economy," Cathy Musick, KFAC executive director, said in announcing the hiring.

Bond, a native of Overbrook, is a spring 2007 Kansas State University graduate with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural communications-journalism and a minor in animal science and industry. During her college career, she worked for the K-State Research and Extension News Service and was student editor of the Agriculture Communications Alumni newsletter and on the staff of the Agriculturalist magazine, both publications of the College of Agriculture. She also completed a public relations internship with Vermeer in Pella, Iowa, where she was involved in a variety of projects.

As part of the KFAC staff, Bond will be involved in the day-to-day functioning of the KFAC office and will assist with the organization's on-going projects to provide agriculture-based curriculum materials and programming to school children and their teachers.

Bond is a firm believer in KFAC's mission to educate children about agriculture. Growing up on a livestock farm, where her family raised and showed cattle and hogs, she has first-hand knowledge of the importance of agriculture. She also understands that many children do not have the same opportunity that she had.

"So many kids these days live in the city and never see livestock or crops up close. They don't know where their food comes from. Ag in the Classroom is a way to help them gain a greater appreciation of agriculture. That's very important for when they grow up and are voting on where their tax dollars are being spent," Bond said. "I think KFAC is really important in getting the word out to teachers by providing information or assembly programs. I'm very excited about working with the foundation."

The Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is a 501(c)(3) organization, which this year celebrated 25 years of educating Kansas children about agriculture. Its office is located in Bluemont Hall on the campus of Kansas State University.
