St. Onge livestock auction

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., showed receipts of 3,001 head Oct. 5, compared to 3,389 head last week and 3,956 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 pounds sold steady to $2 higher, however 600- to 700-pound offerings sold steady to $2 lower. Yearling steers sold mostly steady in a limited test. Heifer calves under 600 pounds sold mostly steady. Yearling heifers were not well tested. Feeder cows sold steady. Slaughter cows and bulls sold $1 to $3 lower. Demand was good for yearlings and calves under 600 pounds with most interest occurring on cattle with both spring and fall shots; demand was moderate for fleshy calves with spring shots only. The feeder supply was comprised of 60% steers and bulls, 40% heifers, with 26% over 600 pounds. Receipts were about 91% feeder cattle and calves, 4% replacement females, 3% slaughter cows and bulls with the balance other miscellaneous cattle.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1385 to 1645 lbs., 45.50 to 48.00; low dressing, 43.00 to 44.00. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1150 to 134 lbs., 43.00 to 45.75; low dressing, 40.50 to 42.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1100 to 1400 lbs., 40.50 to 43.00; low dressing, 35.50 to 37.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1500 to 2225 lbs., 51.50 to 54.75; low dressing, 47.25 to 50.25.
