Hay remains moderate
In Kansas, the hay trade moderate. Demand strong for dairy alfalfa and stock cow quality hay, moderate for grinding alfalfa, alfalfa pellets and prairie hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Oct. 9. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady to firm. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $150-$200, mostly, $180-$200, clippings, $215, 3x4x8 squares, $125-$130; supreme dairy, $145-$160; premium, $135-$150; good, $120-$135; fair/good stock cow, $100-$110, Utility/fair, $95-$105. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$85. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $95-$120, mostly, $100-$105. For the week ending Sept. 29, 13,455 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,488 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. PM6, good, in small squares, $155, in large squares, $130. Cane, good, in large squares, $70. South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $140-$150; premium, $120-$140; good, stock cow, $100-$120, grassy, $85-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$75, some, $80 delivered, Utility, $60-$70. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Sept. 29, 4,012 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,589 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $140-$160; 17% protein, $150-$165; dehydrated, 17% protein, $185. Straw, good, in large squares, $45-$50. Southeast: Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady.
